Bill McDonald

Billy Mac, as he is affectionately known in Michigan golf circles, came to Michigan from Kansas with a suitcase full of trophies including the 1964 USGA Amateur Public Links title.

A special memory from that period includes playing in an exhibition at Topeka CC with the reigning U.S. Open champion Jack Nicklaus, a 16-year-old Tom Watson, and Jean Ashley, the ladies state amateur champion.

Over a 20-year period in Michigan, McDonald dominated public golf tournaments by winning multiple Michigan Publinx Golf Association (MPGA) titles and beat the best in the state by taking the Michigan Amateur Championship in 1981.

McDonald competed in 15 USGA Amateur Public Links Championships and two U.S. Senior Amateur Championships. He won the Super Senior Division of the GAM Senior Championship in 2010.

His service to the game included a term as President of the MPGA and as a GAM Governor for six years. He also served on the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Board.
