James Dewling

James Dewling has done it all in golf, an endeavor he has approached with passion and dedication.

He was introduced to golf at age 10 when he followed his brother Richard to Edgewood Country Club where young James was detailed to sweep the floor. For the entirety of his adult life, Dewling has been connected to golf. He caddied, was caddie superintendent, assistant professional and finally course owner and operator.

He graduated from Michigan State University with a business degree in 1966, the same year he earned his Class A membership in the PGA of America. Mentored by Paul Van Loozen and Ernie Fuller at Edgewood and Hall of Fame member Ray Maguire at Birmingham Country Club, Dewling was appointed general manager and golf professional of Great Oaks Country Club.

His talents touched many of Michigan’s top courses – including the development of Oak Pointe in Brighton, general partnership in Pine Trace and Shepherd’s Hollow, ownership of Mystic Creek in Milford and the establishment of Total Golf Inc., managing or owning more than 40 clubs and designing three courses.

He also served two terms as president of the Michigan Section PGA which reflects his respect among peers.
