Although often overshadowed by his famous brother the golf architect, Alec Ross also had a notable and illustrious golf career.
Emigrating from Scotland as a golf professional, he followed his brother Donald to Pinehurst and quickly made a mark as a player. He won his first North & South Open, a major in its day, in 1902 and would go on to win it five more times.
In 1907 at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, Alec won the U.S Open. In all, he competed in it 17 times, finishing in the top-10 five times. He also won the Massachusetts Open six times and the Swiss Open three times.
At the urging of Horace Rackham, Alec became the first full-time golf professional at Detroit Golf Club in 1916 where he remained until 1947.
The Michigan PGA elected Alec Ross its first President in 1922.
