Lloyd Syron couldn’t help but spend his life in golf.
His father, Frank Syron, was a golf professional and his parents bought Elizabeth Lake Golf & Country Club in 1941, changed the name to Pontiac Country Club and turned it into a mecca for public golfers.
Lloyd started out caddying, went to the University of Notre Dame, played in three NCAA Championships, and in the summer of 1957 won the Michigan Amateur Championship at Belvedere in Charlevoix with a 3 and 2 final match win over John Kurach of Detroit.
After Notre Dame, he settled into the family business at Pontiac CC. It remains a family affair there and they have been a major supporter of public golf in southeast Michigan.
Syron coached the Pontiac Catholic High School golf team for 11 years and was named Michigan High School Golf Coach of the Year in 1981. Both Waterford high schools have used the course as their golf team’s home, and Syron has also sponsored the Oakland County Boys and Girls Golf Tournament and offered reduced rates to junior golfers.
In addition, Syron has maintained the Frank Syron Memorial Tournament, named for Lloyd’s father, as a a stroke play fixture for many of the state’s best golfers every Fourth of July weekend since 1969. His son Mark, the Pontiac CC manager, won “The Syron” in 1990.
Lloyd passed away in June, 2022.
