Jack Berry has covered golf in Michigan for over 55 years – first at the Detroit Free Press and later at the Detroit News.
He was the consummate golf writer. At the Detroit News, he originated the popular “Golf Page,” lending expanded coverage to tournaments, players, courses and the overall golf industry. He also hit the road and covered more than 100 major championships in his career, including 43 Masters Tournaments and British Opens won by Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson and Nick Faldo.
In 1984, Berry was elected President of the prestigious Golf Writers Association of America and later served as its Secretary-Treasurer for eight years, and in 1992, he received a national writing award from the GWAA for a series of golf articles for The Detroit News.
Retired in 1993, he has remained active in golf circles and he has been a tireless advocate for golf, its tenets of etiquette and integrity, and for more access to the game. He remains active with the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame as a board member and is one of the original founding members from 1982. He was inducted into the Hall in 2003.
A past recipient of the Golf Association of Michigan’s Distinguished Service Award, Berry continues to write about golf for a variety of publications. He can be found regularly in writing and in video doing golf interviews for Michigan Golfer Online. Golf devotees never miss a writing of the “Berry Patch.”
