Bruce Fossum rose to the top of his profession in 25 years as golf coach at Michigan State University.
He served as chairman of the NCAA Golf Committee, was elected president of the Golf Coaches Association of America and elected to the Golf Coaches Hall of Fame.
Bruce coached the Spartans to their first Big Ten title in 1969 and coached 10 All-American golfers during his career. Five times his teams earned berths in the NCAA Championships.
In addition to coaching the Spartans, Fossum initiated the nation’s first summer golf school for juniors, authored instructional books and directed films and averaged 500 private lessons and clinics a year.
Bruce joined his wife Mary, the former MSU Women’s coach in the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame. Mary was elected in 2002.
He passed away in 2014 in his hometown of Okemos. He was 86.
