Michael Harris first made his mark at the junior level, winning two Michigan Junior Amateur Championships. Among the amateur wins that followed were the 1998 Northeast Amateur, 1999 GAM Championship and 1995 Horton Smith Invitational, and he was the runner-up at the 1997 Michigan Amateur. He also competed in the 1996 and 1998 U.S. Amateurs.
At the University of Michigan, he twice earned All-American honors, was a three-time All-Big Ten selection, and won eight individual tournament titles, including medalist honors at the 1999 Big Ten Championships.
As a professional he won twice on the Canadian Tour in winning the 2005 Order of Merit. In Michigan, he won five Michigan PGA Tournament of Champions titles and the 2005 Michigan Open. On the PGA Tour, Harris made five starts, with a career-best T-21 finish at the 2005 Canadian Open and played in the 2000 and 2006 U.S. Opens.
