Ray was the head Professional at Western Golf and CC for 37 years – from 1960 to 1997. During this time, he also found occasional time to play in competition and won the PGA Del Rio Open in 1965.
In his later years he found more time to play and won the Michigan Senior PGA championship in 1988, 94, 95 and 96 and was named the Michigan Senior PGA Player of the Year in each of those years. He qualified for the USGA Senior Open four times, the Buick Open six times and the National Club Professional Championship four times.
Other playing success outside of Michigan included victories at a Pebble Beach Pro Am in 1983; the National PGA Senior-Junior in 1990; and the Senior Pro Division at Glen Eagles, Scotland in 1983.
While his playing ability is demonstrated in victories, he is best known as a gentle giant who had time for everyone and asked nothing in return.
