Bob Ackerman grew up playing 5,500-yard PebblewoodCountry Club in hometown Bridgman where he learned to chip to small greens and tried to break his father’s course record of 60. Bob’s best was 62 but he did more than match his dad’s large trophy collection.
He starred on three of Indiana University’s Big Ten championship teams and was co-medalist in the Big Ten Championship Tournament in 1975. He was also an All-Big Ten selection and second-team All-American selection in 1975.
Also in 1975, he won the Michigan Open as a 22-year-old amateur and repeated 28 years later as a professional.
As a professional he won PGA Section titles in Michigan, Minnesota, New York and 13 in Illinois. He was a seven-time Player of the Year in four different PGA sections and won three state Open titles. He is remembered in Illinois as a grand slam winner of four major titles, the Chicago Open, Illinois Open, Illinois PGA and Illinois Match Play. He was also inducted into the Michigan PGA Hall of Fame in 2019.
Starting in 2001 Bob operated Bob Ackerman Golf teaching in the Detroit area and attained the prestigious rank of Master Professional. He passed away in 2022. He was 69.
