Roger Ostrander, widely known as Dr. O, was claimed by cancer in 2015 at age 74, but not before a career as an oral surgeon, and then a second career as a rules official.
He softened the hard-line of golf’s rules with an approachable, outgoing personality and served the game at all levels for over two decades.
As a Golf Association of Michigan Governor he led officiating efforts at dozens of tournaments, including several Michigan Amateurs.
He also worked for the Michigan PGA at their top championships, including the Michigan Open, and officiated for the USGA at six U.S. Opens, nine U.S. Senior Opens and 14 U.S. Amateurs while also being on the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship Committee for 18 years.
He especially enjoyed helping aspiring PGA professionals by conducting PGA Playing Ability Tests for Ferris State University’s professional golf management program.
