Steve Braun, the Golf Association of Michigan president in 2016, helped junior golfers over six decades.
He almost doubled the Flint Junior Golf Association (FJGA) membership while serving as the executive director from 1975-’85, worked for the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) as a tournament director and received the AJGA’s national service honor (Digger Smith Award) in 1992.
The Flint native and Charlevoix resident was a standout amateur golfer, including being the runner-up in the 1979 Michigan Amateur Championship to Pete Green, became a PGA Professional and retired after 12 years of service at storied Belvedere Golf Club in Charlevoix.
Belvedere presented him with an honorary lifetime membership, he was inducted into the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2015, and an FJGA tournament (Steve Braun Cup) is named in his honor.
Still active as a Golf Association of Michigan volunteer rules official and executive committee member, Braun helped develop GAM’s involvement with the successful Youth on Course program.
